The Auvergne is part of the Massif Central, the upland backbone of France.
Its scenery is immensely spectacular, with volcanic hills comprised of 5 separate ranges in the west. Then there are
the high plateaus of the east, with the Monts du Forez forming the region’s eastern boundary with the department of Loire.
In between, there are the gentler Monts du Livradois, encompassed in the Livradois-Forez Natural Park, one of two parks in
the Auvergne, established to protect the region’s natural riches and traditions.
Situated in the very heart of this park, the house Les Frenes is an ideal
location from which to discover all that the region has to offer, since it is positioned close to the very centre of the Auvergne.
The hills and mountains here are relatively gentle, with many areas given over to a variety of agricultural practises, with
flower-rich meadows that are cut for hay forming a large part. All combine to provide opportunities for a variety of pleasant
strolls: through sun-drenched summer pastures with views stretching for hundreds of kilometres; along secluded leafy lanes
or through shady underwood; and alongside spectacular and wild rivers.
Other attractions include...
Architectural heritage: diversity in abundance.
Romanesque art blossomed in mediaeval times, and the many stunning churches are testimony to this, with their harmonious proportions.
Others are in the Gothic style, including the splendid abbey at La Chaise Dieu. Many of these, plus the many magnificent chapels, monuments and chateaux are superbly positioned right on the top of huge rock outcrops and so command stunning
views.
Outstanding natural heritage, with several hundred extinct volcanoes of a
variety of types, in a wild and unspoilt landscape.
A splendid array of rivers and streams, hundreds of mineral springs, and dozens
of volcanic lakes. Water power once brought great prosperity to the region, allowing the establishment of various types of
mill, some of which still function today.
The Auvergne region is the only one in France to boast 5 cheeses with the
"Appellation D’Origine Controlee", the guarantee of authenticity and quality, one of these being of local provenence
- the Fourme D’Ambert. And the region is home to the only "vegetable" to achieve AOC status - the Puy lentil, rich in
life-giving minerals absorbed from the volcanic soils in which they grow.
Super marked trails cross this region, and can be explored on foot, by mountain
bike or on horseback. Or on one of the many tourist trains that run in the summer months through spectacular river
valleys!
A land of ancient traditions: cutlery works at nearby Thiers; paper-making
mills at Ambert; lace-making in le Puy-en-Velay. Numerous festivals, celebrating music, food and traditional "Auvergnat"
arts and crafts.
A winter wonderland of frost, snow and lots of sunshine - why not escape the
uncertainties of a British winter and spend time in the snow-covered Auvergne! Cross-country and downhill skiing is
available.
