Wallcreepers - where to find them!

Your best chance of close-up views of this enigmatic bird.

You may have tried many times before to find just one of these very special birds, all without success, or perhaps you had very distant, fleeting views.  It's time to change all that!  Join Massif Nature on a week's search in places that are far more accessible than the ones you have tried previously, and give yourself the chance of getting a really close, prolonged view of these spectacular birds.  Here in the Auvergne there is a large over-wintering population at low altitudes.  Inhabiting chateaux, quarries, and even small villages - all in spectacular locations - these birds are relatively easy to find.  And a great news network will ensure that we are completely up-to-date with all of the latest sightings.  Join us and greatly improve your chances of adding this highly sought-after species to your list.

In addition, we will observe the tremendous migration of Wood Pigeons and various small passerines, plus Red Kites and, if weather conditions are suitable, Common Cranes.  The Auvergne is also a stronghold for an ever-increasing over-wintering population of Red Kites.  Finch flocks may be large - weather dependant - and include Hawfinch.  These spectacular birds and even Crossbill frequently come down into our garden in the autumn and winter months, to feed on the seeds of numerous "weeds" specially encouraged for their benefit, supplemented by sunflower seeds (organic, locally grown).  Want more?  How about a 100-strong flock of Rock Sparrows?  We'll show you.

The date: Sat 25th October - Saturday 1st November 2008.  Book now to avoid disappointment!

A brief report: the week was a great success, with a Wallcreeper seen on each of the first two days.  NO PROBLEM!  After that we set new targets, and simply enjoyed looking at everything else - including great views of Hawfinch, Dipper, and Eagle Owl.  We visited a spectacular wooded gorge absolutely peppered with ancient mills and mill-wheels, took a stroll on a snow-covered mountain-top, explored some troglodyte caves, and marvelled at the autumnal colours on a hillside covered with vineyards.  Don't miss out on next year's trip - BOOK NOW!
